Head Start health services staff and others can use these resources to learn more about hearing and vision screening. Resources address evidence-based best practices for conducting screenings, communicating with families about screening and follow-up, and resources related to providing services to children with hearing or vision loss.
This is a really BIG job and volunteers are essential to get all of the students through the screening process! Reminding students to be quiet (especially so the hearing testing is successful) We are in great need of volunteers. Please ask friends and family if they can help. We needs at least 5 volunteers at all times during the process.

Unfortunately, many are inappropriate for use with young children or lack scientific evidence. Consequently, visual acuity may be over- or underestimated.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) facilitates the Hearing and Vision screenings provided by your Local Health Department. All of Michigan's children receive this FREE service in public, private, and charter schools as well as in preschool programs, Head Start programs, and large childcare centers.

Basic Hearing & Vision Exams. Vision and hearing screens are routinely done as a part of the well physical at the Kindergarten, 6th grade, and 10th grade physicals. This is mandated by state health requirements at these specific visits. Neither test is invasive. They are screening tools used to see if there are any deficits in vision or hearing.
